The Manchester Untied scouts spotted the very young but highly talented youngster Raphael Varane , from the French club Lens .
But at that same time Real Madrid had Zinedine Zidane as the sporting director of Real Madrid, and being a French world cup winner it favored Raphael Varane who decided to join Real Madrid and not Manchester United.
Manchester United then signed Phil Jones from Blackburn Rovers.
And the rest is History as they say.
