The EURO 1980 was held in ITALY . From 11 june to 22 june. For the first time there were a total of eight teams in the final tournament instead of the usual four teams taking part .
There were fourteen matches played and a total of twentyseven goals were scored in the tournament. The top scorer was the WEST GERMAN KLAUS ALLOPS, with a total of three goals. For the first time seven teams had to qualify , for the first time hosts automatically qualified.
In this EURO CUP a new breed of talent was seen the GERNANS were Hansi Muller, Bernard Schuster, Karl Heinze Rummenigge Horst Hruheesch. The BELGIANS JEAN MARIE PLAFF, ERIC GERETS and ERWIN VENDERBEGH.
The final four teams were 1 WEST GERMANY 2 BELGIUM , 3 CZECHOSLOVAKIA , and ITALY.
In the final GERMANY defeated BELGIUM with a score of 2 - 1.
In the third pace play of CZECHOSLOVAKIA played ITALY. The game ended 1 -1 after extra time. the game was decided by penalty shootout in CZECHOSLOVAKIA beat ITALY 9 - 8.
