THE EURO 2000 .

The EURO 2000 was held for the first time in two host counties . The two countries so chosen were BELGIUM and THE NETHERLANDS. It was held from from june 10 to july 2 2000.
There were 16 countries taking part in the tournament. There were thirtyone matches played in all.
FRANCE played ITALY in the final match .FRANCE beat ITALY in the final match with a score of 2-1. The FRENCH footballer David Trezeguet scored the golden goal after the extra time.
There were a total of 85 goals sored at 2 .74 per match.
The attendence was a total of 1,22,833 at 36,220 per match.
the top scorers were Patrick Kluivert of HOLLAND , and SAVO MILOSEVIC of CROATIA. Each scoring 5 goals.
The best player went to ZINEDINE ZIDANE of FRANCE.
The suprise team was PORTUGAL winniing their three games including a 3 -0 win over GERMANY.
In the semifinal PORTUGAL lost to FRANCE as they conceeded a penalty for a clear handball, but the PORTUGEESE players disagreed and the refree and chalanged the decission. The game became ugly with several players from PORTUGAL pushed the refree . F.I.F.a took action against the players and banned them from all forms of football matches for upto six months. The F.I.F.A rule clearly states that a refree can not be touched at all on the pitch. ZIDANE took the penalty and knocked out PORTUGAL from the tournament.
In the semifinal ITALY verses HOLLAND FRANCESCO TOLDO made two penalty saves in the shootout and one during regulation time to make sure of knocking out the hosts HOLLAND.
