The European footballer of the year for the year 2016 was won by the Portuguese and Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo The final here man short list included the names of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Gianluigi Buffon. Now Gianluigi Buffon becomes the second goalkeeper ever to reach the final three man short list. The last goalkeeper to make this list was the German Manuel Neuer. The lady U.E.F.A European footballer of the year was Leike Merteans from Holland.
