Since the time the world cup started in the year 1930 in Uruguay, thee have been a total of five countries that have lost their first match at the next world cup. Even though there was no world cup held from the year 11938 to the year 1950 due the world war two. So legally speaking Italy were world cup holders in the year 1938.but they had to defend the world cup only in the year 1950. 1) Italy lost their first match in 1950 world cup to Sweden. 2) Argentina won the world cup in 1978, but in the year 1982 ,Argentina lost out to Belgium. 3) Argentina won the the world cup in 1986.But Argentina lost their 1990 match to Cameroon. 4) France won the world cup in the year 1998.But in the year 2002 France lost their opening match to Senegal. 5) Germany on the world cup in 2014. But Germany lost their first game to Mexico in the 2018 world cup.
